Tubular Skylights

Deciding Which Kit to Buy

We’ve kept it simple. Natural Light Tubular Skylights come prepackaged in kits to offer you just the size and style you prefer or require. Answering just a few questions will help you determine the correct kit to purchase. (You also have additional product options that you can purchase separately from the Tubular Skylight Kit; see Options and Extras.)

  1. Decide how much light you'd like
  2. Choose the skylight tube reflectivity
  3. Consider your roof type and pitch
  4. Determine your length requirements
  5. Consider exposure to severe weather
  6. Consider roof assemblies with fire classifications

Decide How Much Light You'd Like

Light output will vary by time of day, roof orientation and shaft length. Tubular Skylights are not recommended for heavily shaded roofs. Use the guidelines below to determine the size and number of tubular skylights for a given space.

Choose the Skylight Tube Reflectivity

Choose from either the 98% reflective tubular skylight or the 95% reflective tubular skylight. The light throughput of the 98% Tubular Skylight is a minimum of 25% whiter and brighter than the 95% Tubular Skylight, when all other factors are equal. Brightness and performance levels of either tubular skylight increase with increased sunlight.

Consider Roof Type Pitch

Determine what type of flashing you need depending on what type of roof you have.

Roof Type Roof Pitch Flashing in Kit Tube Diameter Available
Sloped roof with shingles 3:12 to 12:12 Composite/Asphalt 10" & 14"
Flat Roof Flat to 12:12 Seamless aluminum 10" & 14"
Severe Weather / Hurricane zone roof, sloped with shingles or flat Flat to 12:12 Seamless aluminum 10" & 14"
Sloped roof of tile, metal, and/or corrugated metal 3:12 to 12:12 Formable flashing 10" & 14"

Determining Roof Pitch
"Roof pitch" is how far the roof drops vertically for every 12" of horizontal run.

Determine Your Length Requirements

The standard kit length is 48". Extension tubes measuring 20" and 48" are available. The tubes have a highly reflective mirror finish but the maximum amount of light decreases as the length increases.

Tip: determine if you need extension tubes prior to starting installation.

Skylight Diameter Maximum Lenght of Tube Run
10" 12'
14" 24'

Consider Exposure to Severe Weather

The Natural Light Severe Weather Tubular Skylight Kit includes a polycarbonate dome and seamless aluminum flashing and is recommended in applications with hail or hurricane exposure. Meets Florida Building Code and Miami-Dade County impact requirements. Notice of Acceptance packed with each unit. Note: Kits with seamless aluminum flashing and polycarbonate domes have a design pressure rating of +/- 100 psf. This meets the wind load requirements for Florida and most of the Caribbean Islands.

Consider Roof Assemblies with Fire Classifications

The Natural Light Tubular Skylight Dome Edge Protection Band protects the dome edge on roof assemblies with fire classifications of B or C. Importantly, only the 10" or 14" diameter Natural Light Tubular Skylights with seamless aluminum flashing are approved for fire classification of B or C.
